Overview

SRI International's Advanced Technology and Systems Division (ATSD) performs research and development across a wide range of technical domains for applications including advanced sensing, imaging, navigation and timing systems. SRI specializes in transitioning technology from basic R&D to fieldable prototypes for both US government and commercial customers.

SRI ATSD has an opening for Experimental Physicist within the Quantum & Semiconductor (Q&S) Laboratory in Princeton, NJ. The Q&S Lab conducts R&D in the domains of quantum sensing (cold-atom through vapor-cell physics), III-V semiconductors and device physics toward single-photon imaging systems, and mixed-signal electronics for national security applications. In each of these areas, we develop new technologies with applications in electromagnetic field sensing, Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT), Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), low-light short-wave infrared imaging, and chip-scale mixed-signal hardware security.

Responsibilities

A successful applicant will have a general experimental physics background and will work in the laboratory with other scientists and engineers on a variety of topics. They will contribute on current programs and grow into a task leader and Principal Investigator (PI).

A successful applicant will have a PhD in physics, applied physics, or engineering. The exact domain of expertise is less important than a demonstrated ability to develop both hardware and software in an R&D context. They will be very comfortable in the lab, operating with initiative to design, build and integrate new experimental setups that involve advanced AMO and/or device physics instrumentation (optical, mechanical, vacuum, electronic, and instrumentation subsystems).

Qualifications

  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, applied physics, engineering physics, or related discipline
  • Due to government requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Must have experience in:

  • Developing R&D plans to solve complex problems
  • Laboratory experimental hardware development experience
  • General data analysis skills, typical of those learned in graduate school physics and engineering programs
  • Presentation of complex technical topics to a diverse audience
  • Working in teams
  • Managing multiple priorities
  • Reviewing technical work of others and providing actionable feedback

Desirable skills include:

  • Experience in precision measurements
  • Photon shot noise limited measurements
  • Experience with all, or subsets of, laser systems, optics, vacuum systems, RF, electronics and data-acquisition systems
  • Knowledge of electromagnetics
  • Experience with laboratory design and testing of optical systems, including photonic integrated circuits.
  • Should also possess strong numerical and analytical modeling skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++, COMSOL, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of data acquisition and control systems (e.g. LabView) and signal processing
  • Familiarity with physical measurements and laboratory instrumentation
  • Physical and mechanical intuition

Intangibles

  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Self-motivated
  • Must possess a results-oriented approach
  • Interest in a broad range of technical areas

The salary range is: $93,608-$139,242.  Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles.  SRI has a competitive benefits package, to view details please go to https://www.sri.com/resources/benefits/
