Overview

SRI’s Information & Computing Sciences Division is taking on some of the world’s most important challenges, creating leading-edge technology solutions that have revolutionary impact.  Our researchers are redefining the way human beings interact with machines and with one another through machines, as we define what’s next in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computing for the real world.

The Center for Vision Technologies (CVT) develops and applies its algorithms and hardware to be able to see better with computational sensing, understand the scene using 2D/3D reasoning, understand and interact with humans using interactive intelligent systems, support teamwork through collaborative autonomy, mine big data with multi-modal data analytics and continuously learn through machine learning.

The Vision Systems Lab in CVT is looking for a creative and energetic research scientist with vast experience in digital and analog hardware circuit design and practical background in electrical engineering capabilities and machine learning.  A successful candidate needs to demonstrate the ability of conducting state-of-the-art research, preferably in the areas of computer vision, algorithm/hardware co-design, efficient edge computing, and system architecture design. The goal of the research is to develop systems in applications for imaging, vision, RF, and other sensing domains. The right candidate will possess a strong technical background in computer vision and machine learning algorithms, algorithm hardware mapping, hardware architectures, leverage skills for working across different programs and teams and be able to thrive and succeed in a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic and applied research on computer vision, image/video/sensor processing, and machine learning, with particular focus on hardware algorithm co-design and system development.
  • Understand hardware architectures to enable novel co-design of algorithms and hardware.
  • Effectively lead and contribute to the development and the integration of operational prototypes based on research and investigate their deployment to real world operations.
  • Seek, develop, and champion new business opportunities.  Write and win proposals as part of a team to actively seek funding from various government and commercial agencies.
  • Maintain and enhance visibility at the individual, group, and company level amongst worldwide academic, research and commercial institutions.
  • Give technical and business presentations to external clients, academic and government/ industry audiences and to internal staff and management.
  • Support development of new intellectual property within government, commercial, and internally funded programs to enable new ventures and commercial opportunities.

Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s in computer science with an emphasis in computer vision, machine learning, algorithm understanding for hardware co-design and assistance a hardware development team to implement embedded systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant post schooling research and algorithm co-design experience.
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance.  Current active clearance is a plus.
  • Proven ability to take on a Principal Investigator (PI) role, leading related technology areas through advancement and proposal/funding opportunities with clients.
  • Track record of technical excellence in basic and applied research including publications, conference, and journals such as computer vision, machine learning, hardware and algorithms, digital design.
  • Proven successful experience in championing concepts through innovation and the proposal process resulting to program awards.
  • Proven experience in successfully delivering novel solutions to proposed programs.
  • Excellent presentation, written skills and have ability to champion ideas to successful completion.
  • Ability to lead projects and people, as well as skills to work as a part of a team to achieve technical and project goals.
  • Work effectively and successfully on multi-skilled teams.

Desired skills:

  • Ability to perform algorithm and hardware architecture co-design of computer vision and machine learning algorithms enabling a hardware team to implement co-design into various hardware devices including FPGA’s or ASIC’s.

The salary range is: $170,000-$207,000. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles. Positions may also qualify for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance program or the annual Performance Based Compensation program.
