Overview

The Veterinary Technician (VT) will be asked to perform standard paraveterinary health care procedures. Procedures are typically performed without detailed supervision, usually in a clinical or laboratory animal setting. The VT serves as department liaison to research groups for animal health related matters. Performs observations and examination of animal(s) and animal colonies for signs of illness and follows-up on animals reported ill or demonstrating abnormal behavior. Reports animal health care problems and concerns to the veterinarian for consultation, advice or instruction. Keeps investigative groups informed of all animal health related matters pertaining to their animals. Administers necessary medications or treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian including follow-up procedures and daily documentation of all diagnostic and treatment procedures. Ensures that treatment regimens are consistent with IACUC approved protocols. Practice a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.  Must have the ability to work independently, perform multiple projects and meet deadlines, and maintain sanitation standards. Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent writing skills, and ability to thrive in a stressful and fast-paced environment.

 

This is an onsite position located in Harrisonburg, VA.

Responsibilities

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • With or without veterinary supervision by the Attending/Clinical Veterinarian, the Vet Tech must:
  • Be able to perform accurate clinical assessments of animals.
  • Have advanced knowledge and proficiency of veterinary clinical techniques such as phlebotomy, fluid therapy, anesthesia, and other physical intervention.
  • Provide emergency care and treatment including wound and trauma management.
  • Perform minor surgery and assist in aseptic surgery.
  • Perform gross necropsies and tissue collection in accordance with veterinarian's instructions and appropriately prepare specimens for diagnostic laboratory processing.
  • Maintain sanitized, well-stocked and organized procedure rooms, and surgical suite, including preparing surgical packs, and ensure instruments are clean and functioning properly.
  • Maintain an inventory of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, and provide support and guidance to investigative groups through ordering the appropriate items for use on studies.
  • Have knowledge of proper methods of safe handling, restraint of rodent species, as well have the ability to teach and train newer staff on these methods.
  • Assesses incoming animals’ health reports under the direction of the Veterinarian.

DEPARTMENTAL / INTERDEPARTMENTAL DUTIES:

  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings, contributes to planning, scheduling and completion of study schedule requirements.
  • Develop technical training modules and participates in and/or conducts teaching and training activities by demonstrating techniques or procedures which are recorded and maintained as official documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Follows established client and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines.
  • Participates in enrichment program.
     

Qualifications

  • More than 3-5 years of applicable experience, including hands-on experience performing veterinary care, treatment, and anesthetic induction.
  • Requires completion of AVMA accredited Animal Health Technician program or possess a Registered Veterinary Technician license. (A bachelor’s degree plus 1 year of applicable experience may substitute for licensure requirement.)
  • Able to respond on weekends and holidays to veterinary emergency calls.
  • No known allergies to laboratory species of animals.
  • Able to lift/carry 50 lbs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

The salary range is: $39,460-$44,976/Annual. Salary ranges will vary and are based on several factors, including geographic location, market competitiveness and equity amongst internal employees in similar roles.
